Funny Movie on Netflix October 2018
Oscar season is building steam, with buzzy movies hitting the multiplex. The fall TV season is in full swing, with your favorite shows finally returning from summer hiatus (and a lot of new series making their debut). And, naturally, Netflix brings us new titles to its overwhelming slate of movies, TV shows, and comedy specials.
Here, we give you the top movies hitting the service in September, as well as the full list of titles you'll want to stream this month.
Billy Madison (October 1)
Adam Sandler co-wrote this comedy, which launched his big-screen debut as America's leading doofus. The titular character is primed to inherit his father's millions—but only if the dimwit can prove his intelligence, an effort that forces him to complete all 12 grades of school in two weeks.
Blazing Saddles (October 1)
Mel Brooks's send-up of the American myths of the western genre earned three Oscar nominations—a rarity for this sort of silly parody film—and follows a black man who becomes sheriff of a frontier town and is tasked with protecting its residents from pillaging thugs.
Mystic River (October 1)
Clint Eastwood's crime epic follows the murder of a teenage girl and the unraveling of the families affected by the crime in a close-knit Boston community. Sean Penn and Tim Robbins both won Oscars for their stirring performances.
Once Upon a Time in America (October 1)
Sergio Leone's final film is a searing crime epic that charts the lives of a group of men as they come of age in New York City's Jewish ghettos, ultimately rising out of poverty and into the underbelly of the city's organized crime world.
Pee-wee's Big Adventure (October 1)
When his beloved bicycle is stolen, what's a lovable man-child to do? Paul Reubens brought his comic character Pee-wee Herman to the big screen in Tim Burton's directorial debut, a farcical adventure parody of the classic Italian film Bicycle Thieves.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (October 1)
Every generation gets the Robin Hood it deserves. For '90s kids, it was this gritty and glamour-free retelling of the British legend with hunks Kevin Costner, Alan Rickman, and Christian Slater in the cast (plus an Oscar-nominated pop ballad from Bryan Adams).
The Dead Pool (October 1)
No, not the wisecracking anti-superhero played by Ryan Reynolds. This Dead Pool stars Clint Eastwood in his final outing as "Dirty" Harry Callahan, a San Francisco police inspector who must hunt down a serial killer who is targeting local celebrities.
The Shining (October 1)
Stephen King's classic novel inspired one of the greatest horror films of all time, directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Jack Nicholson. A writer moves his wife and young son into a remote Colorado hotel to mange the property during its off-season, and he slowly loses his grip on reality as the complex's resident ghosts and demons screw with his mind.
22 July (October 10)
United 93 and Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass turns his camera lens to another recent historical event for this Netflix original film: the 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway committed by Anders Behring Breivik.
